10 ans d\u00e9ja …!<\/h4>\n

En faisant un point il n’y a pas longtemps, je me suis rendue compte que Creatures Dolls allait f\u00eater ses 10 ans d’existence !… Je n’en revenais pas en fait …<\/p>\n

Je n’ai pas vu le temps passer…! Ce doit \u00eatre bon signe car cela veut dire que mon boulot me plait toujours autant ! Cela me para\u00eet compl\u00e8tement incroyable quand j’y pense !… Et pourtant, c’est effectivement en 2011 que j’ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de me lancer \u00e0 plein temps dans la cr\u00e9ation de dolls et de laisser tomber le dessin et la bande-dessin\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

J’avais d\u00e9couvert les BJD quelques ann\u00e9es auparavant, mais je n’y pensais pas du tout en terme de travail \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque. Cela restait un hobby et quelque chose de r\u00e9cr\u00e9atif, m\u00eame si le modelage et les activit\u00e9s manuelles m’int\u00e9ressaient beaucoup. L’id\u00e9e a germ\u00e9, lentement. Comme j’ai tendance \u00e0 m’\u00e9parpiller dans mes activit\u00e9s cr\u00e9atives (XD ahah), j’ai quand m\u00eame commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 bricoler des petites figurines, des petits personnages, a dessiner des plans de bjd en m\u00eame temps que mes dossiers BD. Je me suis inscrite en 2007 sur le forum fran\u00e7ais Mat\u00e9riel C\u00e9leste<\/a> pour en conna\u00eetre d’avantage sur les BJD et \u00e9changer avec d’autres collectionneurs(ses).<\/p>\n

J’ai craqu\u00e9 assez rapidement pour une t\u00eate de Unoa Sist (la doll qui m’avait justement fait rentrer dans l’univers des BJD), m\u00eame si cela repr\u00e9sentait un sacr\u00e9 budget pour moi \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Forc\u00e9ment j’ai voulu trouver un corps pour cette t\u00eate, mais impossible de trouver les fonds pour acheter un corps. Une amie m’a sugg\u00e9rer de le faire moi m\u00eame, mais je ne me voyais pas faire \u00e7a … Cela me semblait trop compliqu\u00e9 \u00e0 faire. Et puis au final, j’avais trop envie de voir cette t\u00eate sur un corps, donc je me suis lanc\u00e9e !… Le premier corps que j’ai fait en plastiroc \u00e9tait… vraiment moche ! XD Mais \u00e7a faisait l’affaire en attendant d’avoir le budget pour quelque chose de plus professionnel ! Cela m’a servi de test pour la suite surtout, j’ai pu voir ce qu’il fallait faire et pas faire, le temps que j’avais mis, etc.<\/p>\n

Flamm\u00e8che, premier de la liste.<\/h4>\n

Et puis en 2009, apr\u00e8s m’\u00eatre beaucoup renseign\u00e9e, je me suis lanc\u00e9e en cr\u00e9ant le petit personnage de Flamm\u00e8che. Cela m’a permis de bien comprendre comment fonctionnaient les articulations, comment s’y prendre aussi pour gagner du temps sur le modelage et l’organisation du \u00ab\u00a0chantier\u00a0\u00bb, comment ensuite pr\u00e9parer la poup\u00e9e pour le moulage (surfacer mon ami) et enfin comment \u00e7a marche le moulage et les tirages en r\u00e9sine. Sur ce point j’ai eu de la chance car une de mes soeurs, qui travaille dans une fonderie d’art, connaissait tr\u00e8s bien le syst\u00e8me des moules en deux parties. Cela m’a fait gagner du temps sur la partie un peu plus technique !<\/p>\n

On a donc fait les moules avec de la p\u00e2te \u00e0 modeler et des briques de Lego puis j’ai d\u00e9couvert les joies du silicone ! XD Une mati\u00e8re pas facile \u00e0 appr\u00e9hender… Il y a eu pas mal de ratages, mais c’\u00e9tait super de d\u00e9mouler les pi\u00e8ces et de voir la doll prendre vie au fur et \u00e0 mesure de son assemblage !… J’ai ador\u00e9 travailler sur ce projet. Cela faisait un peu trop de choses \u00e0 apprendre\/d\u00e9couvrir \u00e0 la fois, mais au final j’ai r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 tirer quelques exemplaires.<\/p>\n

C’est parti pour une 2e !<\/h4>\n

Une fois que Flamm\u00e8che \u00e9tait fini, j’ai encha\u00een\u00e9 tr\u00e8s vite sur mon second projet : XB-12, un mix entre organique et cyborg (d’o\u00f9 son nom). C’\u00e9tait au d\u00e9but de 2010 et j’\u00e9tais toujours en mode exploration artistique, en parall\u00e8le de mes d\u00e9marches en BD et illustration jeunesse. Mais c’\u00e9tait sympa de se donner un nouveau d\u00e9fi car l’exp\u00e9rience Flamm\u00e8che m’avait beaucoup plut !<\/p>\n

Le fait de cr\u00e9er un perso de A \u00e0 Z puis de pouvoir le tenir dans ses mains une fois en r\u00e9sine, le voir s’articuler et poser, c’\u00e9tait vraiment une sensation incroyable.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Comme c’\u00e9tait une doll plus grande et que je voulais vraiment perfectionner la posabilit\u00e9, j’y ai pass\u00e9 beaucoup plus de temps ! D’autant plus que je voulais faire une t\u00eate avec des pics qui partent en arri\u00e8re dans un esprit un peu science-fiction, ce qui m’a donn\u00e9 du fil \u00e0 retordre… Ce personnage \u00e9tait plus orient\u00e9 sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 cyborg au tout d\u00e9but, puis j’ai finalement abandonn\u00e9 cet aspect au fur et \u00e0 mesure de sa cr\u00e9ation.<\/p>\n

Comme souvent, entre l’id\u00e9e, le dessin et le prototype, il y a toujours un foss\u00e9 !<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

J’ai test\u00e9 plusieurs fa\u00e7ons de faire l’arri\u00e8re de t\u00eate, mais c’\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s fragile. J’ai du laisser tomber cette id\u00e9e lorsque s’est pos\u00e9e la question du moulage : en effet, sans le mat\u00e9riel d\u00e9di\u00e9 (cloche \u00e0 vide pour les moules et les tirages) il m’\u00e9tait impossible de reproduire ensuite ce genre de t\u00eate. En plus \u00e0 cette \u00e9chelle c’\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s compliqu\u00e9 (la t\u00eate \u00e9tait assez petite). J’ai donc opt\u00e9 pour un arri\u00e8re de t\u00eate classique en me disant que je verrai bien par la suite comment faire : pourquoi pas faire une coiffe amovible ou ce genre de chose.<\/p>\n

2010 c’est aussi l’ann\u00e9e du 1er Ldoll<\/a> !<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

J’avais vu que ce salon \u00e9tait d\u00e9di\u00e9 aux BJD principalement et j’ai h\u00e9sit\u00e9 \u00e0 participer, mais mon projet n’\u00e9tait pas assez avanc\u00e9 et je ne pensais pas \u00eatre pr\u00eate \u00e0 temps, donc je n’ai pas particip\u00e9. Mon budget \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s serr\u00e9 \u00e9galement, j’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9pens\u00e9 pas mal d’argent dans les produits de moulage et la r\u00e9sine, ainsi que les appr\u00eats et la Ladoll pour le prototype, donc j’\u00e9tais un peu fauch\u00e9e…<\/p>\n

C’\u00e9tait une \u00e9poque tr\u00e8s difficile financi\u00e8rement (boulots alimentaires, budget tr\u00e8s faible pour manger par semaine, je n’allais pas chez le m\u00e9decin quand j’\u00e9tais malade car peur d’\u00eatre dans le rouge, etc). Je ne m’\u00e9talerai pas sur ce point car ce n’est pas l’objet de mon article, mais c’est vrai que les choses n’ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 faciles et c’est pour cela que ce que je fais me tient tant \u00e0 coeur ! C’est aussi la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 dans pas mal de boulot artistiques et ind\u00e9pendants, c’est important je pense de le savoir.<\/p>\n

Bref, tout cela m’avait motiv\u00e9e pour finir XB-12 pour le Ldoll suivant ! Donc durant 2011, je me suis occup\u00e9e de finir mon prototype, de faire les moules et les tirages en r\u00e9sine. J’ai pu tirer 6 dolls compl\u00e8tes pour le festival.<\/p>\n

Encore plus de boulot !<\/h4>\n

Il me restait aussi \u00e0 pr\u00e9voir des bo\u00eetes et tout ce qui va avec (certificat, yeux etc). Je pensais en acheter directement, mais trouver la taille qui convenait \u00e9tait probl\u00e9matique, et cela revenait moins cher de les faire toutes \u00e0 la main, donc je me suis dit que pour 6 dolls c’\u00e9tait faisable. En plus, je voulais faire de jolies bo\u00eetes d’inspiration steampunk, donc c’\u00e9tait la meilleure solution.<\/p>\n

Heureusement que le salon \u00e9tait en octobre car j’ai eu tout juste le temps de finir ce que je voulais !<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mon seul regret \u00e9tait que je n’avais pas eu le temps de customiser une doll ou deux avec un make up et des v\u00eatements. Il faut dire aussi qu’\u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, je n’avais pas eu beaucoup de BJD entre les mains, et donc peu d’exp\u00e9rience en terme de maquillage… J’avais test\u00e9 des choses sur ma Unoa, mais ce n’\u00e9tait pas tr\u00e8s concluant… ! Ce n’\u00e9tait pas \u00e9vident non plus de trouver des tutos pour les make up ni les produits pour les r\u00e9aliser…<\/p>\n

C’est \u00e0 ce moment l\u00e0 que j’ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 qu’il y avait beaucoup de choses \u00e0 penser lorsqu’on cr\u00e9e une poup\u00e9e, qu’il fallait \u00eatre polyvalent et que c’\u00e9tait d\u00e9finitivement une activit\u00e9 \u00e0 plein temps.<\/p>\n

Ce premier Ldoll f\u00fbt une grande exp\u00e9rience et un grand moment ! J’ai d\u00fb prendre sur moi pour m’y rendre car je souffre de troubles li\u00e9s au stress ; c’\u00e9tait vraiment difficile comme d\u00e9marche. Mais \u00e0 mon retour, j’\u00e9tais enchant\u00e9e d’y avoir particip\u00e9 car j’avais pu rencontrer plein de monde et voir enfin en vrai beaucoup de cr\u00e9ations que je n’avais vu jusqu’alors que sur internet … et c’est vrai que \u00e7a change pas mal de choses ! J’ai pu vendre quelques cr\u00e9ations \u00e9galement, ce qui m’a vraiment r\u00e9confort\u00e9e, car je n’avais pas du tout confiance en moi (j’\u00e9tais persuad\u00e9e que personne n’aimerait mon travail), et encourag\u00e9e \u00e0 continuer.<\/p>\n

Et puis pour aller au bout de mon projet de d\u00e9part, j’ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 apr\u00e8s le Ldoll de tirer une XB-12 verte et de lui faire l’arri\u00e8re de t\u00eate qui \u00e9tait pr\u00e9vu au d\u00e9part. Je voulais vraiment voir ce que \u00e7a pouvait donner une fois toute customis\u00e9e !<\/p>\n

C’est une cr\u00e9ature que j’aime beaucoup et j’esp\u00e8re vraiment avoir le temps de lui redonner vie dans le futur… mais dans une version am\u00e9lior\u00e9e !<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

J’ai fait les pics dans une mati\u00e8re plus r\u00e9sistante (milliput) pour \u00eatre s\u00fbre que cela tienne dans le temps et je les ai fix\u00e9s sur un headback (arri\u00e8re de t\u00eate) en r\u00e9sine. Ensuite j’ai peint le tout \u00e0 l’a\u00e9rographe pour faire le raccord entre la couleur du corps et la t\u00eate. Puis pour le v\u00eatement, j’ai demand\u00e9 \u00e0 une couturi\u00e8re de me faire une robe d’apr\u00e8s mes croquis ; elle a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une superbe robe tout \u00e0 fait dans l’esprit que je voulais ! J’\u00e9tais tr\u00e8s contente du r\u00e9sultat !<\/p>\n

10 years already…!<\/h4>\n

By making a point not long ago about my work, i realized that Creatures Dolls was going to celebrate its 10 years of existence! … I couldn’t believe it …<\/p>\n

I did not realize that time flies that quickly…! It must be a good sign because it means that i still enjoy my job ! It looks completely incredible to me when i think about it! … And yet, it was indeed in 2011 that i decided to launch myself full time in dolls stuffs and to give up drawing and comics.<\/p>\n

I had discovered BJDs a few years ago, but i didn’t think about it at all in terms of work at that time. It was still a hobby and something i had fun with, although modeling and manual activities were of great interest to me. The idea grew in my mind, slowly. As i tend to scatter myself in my creative activities (XD ahah), i still started to tinker with small figurines, small characters, to draw bjd plans at the same time as my comic books. In 2007, i registered on the french forum \u00ab\u00a0Mat\u00e9riel C\u00e9leste<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb to learn more about BJDs and discuss with other collectors.<\/p>\n

I bought fairly quickly a Unoa Sist head (the doll that had just made me enter the world of BJDs), even if it represented quite a budget for me at the time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Of course, i wanted to find a body for this head, but I couldn’t find the funds to buy one. A friend suggested that I could do it by myself, but I couldn’t imagine myself doing this …! It seemed too complicated to do. But actually, i really wanted to see this face on a body… so i decided i had to do it! …<\/p>\n

The first body i made was in plastiroc and… omg, it was really ugly! XD But it did the job while waiting to have the budget for something more professional! It served me as a test for the future, especially what to do and not to do, the time that I had put in, etc.<\/p>\n

Flamm\u00e8che, first on the list.<\/h4>\n

And then in 2009, after a lot of research, i started to create the little character of \u00ab\u00a0Flamm\u00e8che\u00a0\u00bb (means small flame in french). This allowed me to understand well how the joints worked, how to save time on modeling and global organization, how to prepare the doll for molding (surfacer my friend ahah) and finally how does molding and resin casting work. On this point i was lucky because one of my sisters, who works in an art foundry, was very familiar with the two-parts mold system. It saved me time on the more technical part!<\/p>\n

So we made the molds with plasticine and Lego bricks and then i discovered the joys of silicone! XD A material not easy to grasp … There were a lot of fails, but it was great to unmold the parts and see the doll come to life as it was assembled! … I loved working on this project. It was a little too much to learn \/ discover at the same time, but in the end i managed to cast a few dolls.<\/p>\n

Once \u00ab\u00a0Flamm\u00e8che\u00a0\u00bb was finished, i quickly moved on to my second project: XB-12, a mix of cyborg and organic character (hence her name). It was at the beginning of 2010 and i was still in artistic exploration mode, in parallel with my comics and children’s illustration works. But it was nice to give myself a new challenge because i really enjoyed the \u00ab\u00a0Flamm\u00e8che\u00a0\u00bb experience!<\/p>\n

Creating a character from scratch and then being able to hold it in your hands once in resin, to see it articulate and pose, it was really an incredible feeling.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As XB-12 was a larger doll and that i really wanted to improve the posability, i spent a lot more time on her! Especially since i wanted to make her head with spikes that go backwards in a little science fiction spirit, which gave me a hard time… This character was more oriented on the cyborg side at the very beginning, and then i finally let go of that aspect as i was working on her.<\/p>\n

As often, between the idea, the drawing and the prototype, there is always a gap!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I tested several ways to make theheadback, but it was very fragile. I had to drop this idea when the question of molding arose: indeed, without the dedicated equipment (vacuum bell for the molds and casting) it was impossible for me to reproduce this kind of head afterwards. In addition to this scale it was very complicated (the head was quite small). So I opted for a classic headback, telling myself i will see how to do it later: why not make a removable headdress or something like that.<\/p>\n

2010 is also the year of the 1st Ldoll<\/a> festival!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I saw that this show was mainly dedicated to BJDs and i really hesitated to participate, but my project was not quite advanced and i didn’t think i could be ready on time, so I did not participate. My budget was very tight as well, i had already spent quite a bit of money on molding and resin products, as well as primers and Ladoll for the prototype, so i was a little broke…<\/p>\n

It was a very difficult time financially speaking (day job, very low budget to eat per week, i did not go to the doctor when i was sick because i was afraid of being overdrawn, etc.). I will not dwell on this because it is not the point of my article, but it’s true that things was not always easy and that’s why what i do means so much to me! It’s also the reality in a lot of artistic and independent jobs, i think it’s important to know that.<\/p>\n

Anyway, all this motivated me to finish XB-12 for the next Ldoll festival! So during 2011, I took care of finishing my prototype, making the molds and resin casting. I was able to assemble 6 full dolls for the festival.<\/p>\n

I also had to find boxes and everything that goes with them (certificate, eyes, etc.). I was thinking of buying them, but finding the right size was problematic, and it was cheaper to do them all by hand, so I figured that for 6 dolls it was doable. Besides, I wanted to make some pretty steampunk inspired boxes, so this was the best solution.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the show was in October because i barely had time to finish what i wanted!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My only regret was that I didn’t have time to customize a doll or two with make up and clothes. It must also be said that at that time, i didn’t had a lot of BJD in my hands, and therefore little experience in terms of makeup… I tested things on my Unoa faceplate, but it was not very conclusive…! It was not easy either to find tutorials for the make up or the products to make them… At this moment, i realized that there were a lot of things to think about when you create a doll, that you had to be versatile and that it was definitely a full-time activity.<\/p>\n

I also had to think about my logo or a way to present my work and found that it was a really tricky part! I spent a lot of time thinking about it and finally i decided to gather my work under the name \u00ab\u00a0Creatures Dolls\u00a0\u00bb, which sums up the spirit of my work!<\/p>\n

This first Ldoll was a great experience and a great moment! I had to take it on myself to get there because i suffer from stress-related disorders; it was really difficult as a process. But when i came back, i was so happy i participated because i could meet a lot of people and finally see for real many creations that I had only seen on the internet until then… and it’s completely different from a screen! I was able to sell a few dolls as well, which really comforted me, as I had no confidence at all (I was sure no one would like my work), and encouraged me to go on with dolls.<\/p>\n

And then to go to the end of my starting project, i decided, after the Ldoll festival, to cast a green XB-12 and make the headback that i imagined originally. I really wanted to see what it could be like once everything was customized!<\/p>\n

It’s a creature that i really like and i wish i have time to bring it back to life in the future… but in an improved version!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I made the spikes in a more resistant material (milliput) to be sure that it would last over time and i attached them to a resin headback. Then i painted everything with an airbrush to make the connection between the color of the body and the head. Then for the clothing, i asked a seamstress to sew a dress according to my sketches; she managed to create a stunning dress in the exact way i wanted! I was very happy with the result!<\/p>\n
